We’re proud to announce that we have invested in two brand new, high powered CNC laser cutting machines from Bystronic UK, a clear sign of our ongoing commitment to remain at the forefront of the laser profiling industry.
Cutting non-ferrous and highly reflective materials using CO2 laser technology has always been a tricky operation. Due to the potential issues that can arise, many profiling companies has often shied away from using lasers to cut these reflective metals.
Charles Day, a leading Sheffield based laser cutting and profiling firm, was recently commissioned by bespoke hand-built drum manufacturer VK Drums to laser cut a range of drum parts including Stainless Steel drum hoops, mounts and lugs plus many more.
Priding themselves on their attention to detail and the quality of the materials going into each drum kit, VK Drums required a laser cutting service which provided the highest level of finish and cut quality, befitting of their reputation, a service for which Charles Day was more than happy to provide.
Back in October 2013 one of our customers Stefan Tooke was commissioned to make a new crosier for the Bishop of Sheffield Steven Croft. A crosier is a ceremonial staff used by the Bishop, the Bishops current crosier is over 100 years old and is not allowed to leave Sheffield cathedral.
Not only will the new crosier be able to be used in ceremonies in other parishes, but the piece jointly celebrates the centenary of Harry Brearley’s discovery of stainless steel in 2013 and the centenary of the Sheffield Cathedral which was elevated from parish church status when the new diocese was created in 1914.
Local Sheffield artist Lucy Coyne contacted us back in March to be a sponsor of the steel city cascade, a stainless steel sculpture to be hung from the roof of the Sheffield Winter Gardens.
The project was collaboration between Lucy and various schools within Sheffield to design and fabricate a suspended sculpture. It is centre piece to the Sheffield Children’s Festival but also incorporates the 100 year stainless steel celebrations.
Stuart Mitchell is a quality custom knife maker based in Portland Works, Sheffield. Stuart can create custom knives to any size, shape or specification.
He was commissioned to design and craft a limited run of stainless steel centennial knives. Sticking to the history of Portland Works he wanted to create a kitchen knife. Stuart came to Charles Day (Steels) to get his knife blanks laser cut, after which he crafted them into works of art.
We are pleased to announce the successful installation and operation of two new laser machines with full sheet and plate automation:
- Our fully automated sheet storage towers for 24/7 cutting are reducing delivery times.
- BySpeed Pro: up to 25mm in carbon and stainless.
- BySprint Fiber – High speed cutting up to 5mm including Non-ferrous (Bronze, Copper and Brass).
Back in November 2012 Charles Day invested £1.5 million in a 6kw BySpeed Pro, a 3kw BySprint Fiber and a ByCell Cross auto handling system including sheet storage towers to feed both machines. As with any large scale investment there were initial teething problems, but the installation of the fibre laser has been an outstanding success. Through extensive testing and customer experience Charles Day (Steels) has found the fibre laser excels when cutting material 5mm and thinner. The results are it is cheaper, faster and the quality is indistinguishable from CO2 lasers when cutting thin material.
The Sheffield based firm have added a Bycell Cross, 3kw BySprint Fiber 3015 and 6kw BySpeed Pro with full sheet and plate automation to their existing capacity of four flat bed laser machines, making Charles Day (Steels) Ltd one of the largest and diverse specialist profile cutting companies in the UK.
