Weld Prep Angles up to 60°
Here at Charles Day, our unrivalled metal profiling capabilities ensure the best quality parts are procured in a rapid turnaround. Offering some of the very best in metal profiling, we can provide weld preps and chamfers in angles up to 60 degrees on plates between 3mm and 250mm, with greater thicknesses available on request.
Weld preparation of metal parts carried out during the profiling process helps our customers save both time and money. By combining the cutting and bevelling processes from a single source, including high-precision laser bevel cutting, we reduce the number of steps within the supply chain, improving efficiency, reducing handling, and saving you money overall.
With industry-defining capabilities available on-site, we can produce top-face and bottom-face (or a combination of both) edge preps up to 60°, with high accuracy and repeatability. Preps are commonly requested on metals such as stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminium, but we can also perform bevels on tough metals such as wear plate, duplex, super duplex, and Inconel.
We can also create expert weld preps on laser, waterjet, and flame parts, ensuring the most effective cutting method is selected based on material type, thickness, and project requirements. Our weld preparations are suitable for single and double-sided, partial and full-penetration butt welds, supporting both conventional fabrication processes and more advanced welding applications.
Weld Joint Configurations at Charles Day Steels
Due to our unrivalled facilities, we can procure a range of joint configurations, all produced with precision and consistency using the most suitable cutting technology.
Single Weld Prep
Also known as a bevel cut, the desired angle of the edge prep goes completely through the thickness of the plate and can be achieved using modern laser bevel cutting methods.
Weld Prep With Root Face
Sometimes referred to as a chamfer, the contour of the edge prep only penetrates a proportion of the material thickness, leaving a partially flat edge for improved weld control and consistency.
Compound Weld Prep
Two different angle bevels are carried out on a single face, often used in more complex fabrications where accuracy is critical.
Double Weld Prep with Root Face
A double-weld prep features a bevel/chamfer on both the top face and bottom face of the plate, improving weld access and structural integrity.
K-Bevel
A double-weld prep featuring a bevel/chamfer on both the top face and bottom face of the plate, with differing angles to suit specific engineering requirements.
J Weld Prep
Unlike straight chamfers, a J prep works off a set radius to create a smooth, curved edge, helping to reduce weld volume and improve welding efficiency.
Bevel Cutting Methods at Charles Day Steels
To ensure the most accurate weld preps, we offer multiple bevel cutting methods tailored to your material type, thickness, and project needs.
Laser Bevel Cutting
Our advanced laser bevel cutting technology showcases the most precise and efficient method for producing weld preps. Ideal for a wide range of materials and thicknesses, laser bevel cutting delivers exceptional edge quality, tight tolerances, and high repeatability, while significantly reducing the need for secondary processing. This method is particularly effective for projects requiring speed, accuracy, and consistency, making it the preferred choice for many modern, high-volume fabrication applications.
- 50-degree bevel cutting
- 6510mm x 2600mm cutting bed
- Complex bevel geometries in up to 40mm thick material
Waterjet Bevel Cutting
Waterjet bevel cutting provides a highly versatile alternative, particularly suited to thicker materials or applications where heat-affected zones must be avoided. Using a cold cutting process, waterjet technology maintains the structural integrity of the material while still achieving accurate bevels and complex geometries. This makes it ideal for specialist materials and projects where thermal distortion is a concern and machining costs can be prohibitive.
- 60-degree bevel cutting
- 9000mm x 4000mm cutting bed
- Cold cutting bevel process on up to 250mm thick material
