Overview of the Waterjet Cutting Process
Waterjet profiling is a methodology that is
used for profiling materials like granite, ceramics,
titanium, armor plate and stainless steel. In this profiling
method, water is pressurized up to 60,000 psi and is
then forced through a diamond or sapphire nozzle that
is fine enough and powerful enough to pass through most
soft materials. Mixed with abrasive sand like garnet
it can slice through harder materials as well. A fine
and accurate finish can be accomplished with waterjet
profiling.
Details of Waterjet profiling
Unlike other processes that use heat or lasers for
cutting, this process uses pressurized water for cutting.
The water is pressurized to such a high degree through
a fine nozzle that it can be used for cutting, structuring,
ablation and profiling of a wide range of materials.
With waterjet profiling no burring
or thermal stress occurs. This method of profiling can
handle a much wider range and thickness than other profiling
methods and is fast becoming the most popular method
across the world. It is commonly used for cutting thicker
materials such as ceramics, stone or metals. The resulting
cut surface may appear to have been sand-blasted, though
the finish completely depends upon the speed of cutting.
Waterjet Profiling Highlights
Some of the benefits of waterjet profiling include:
- Waterjet profiling is a cold cutting process and
so there is no thermal distortion.
- The cutting process is tension free, and uses a
minimal cutting force
- Can be used for soft materials such as foam as
well as hard materials
- Waterjet Profiling can process materials up to
300mm thick
- It can handle highly detailed and complex profiles
