Steel Laser Cutting

Charles Day Steel Laser Cutting Systems

Charles Day Steel laser cutting systems are at the forefront of steel profiling technology. By mixing CO2 with other gases, a gas laser is created which can accurately cut steel and other component parts with a less than a 0.130mm tolerance.

Computer software is used to accurately control the position and the cutting path of the laser, providing exceptional definition and detail to a high quality and standard.

Advantages of Laser Cutting

Charles Day Steels laser cutting systems can cut up to 20mm in carbon and stainless steel. The Laser metal cutting systems are fast and efficient, incredibly accurate and can reduce the need for further machining.

Laser cutting can produce complex internal and external detail, small diameter holes can be produced and clean burr free edges are produced.

The Laser cutting Process

The beam from the laser is focused on to the surface of the steel or other material being cut by means of a lens. The focused laser cutting beam heats the material surface and a very local melt capillary is quickly established throughout the depth of the material.

A significant feature of gas assisted laser cutting is that the molten material is ejected from the base of the capillary by a jet of gas coaxial with the laser beam. Stainless steel is cut utilising nitrogen as the laser cutting assist gas, which prevents oxide on the cut edge, eliminating secondary processing prior to welding.

The steel is cut by either moving the focused laser cutting beam across the surface of the stationary metal or by keeping the laser beam stationary and moving the work piece.

Process Applications and Uses

The steel laser cutting system is typically used for cutting, drilling and engraving. It can be used to cut nearly all metals including steel and stainless steel, as well as plastics, wood and even paper.

The laser cutting process is most economical with steel between .05mm to 20mm thick, and is commonly used to cut flat sheet steel of medium thickness for sheet metal processing.

Laser cutting can perform highly complex profiles, as well as fast and cost efficient cutting.
